Stamp auction results round up: February 2020

Warwick and Warwick’s recent sale featured British classics, including a collection consisting of 189 Penny Blacks and 52 Penny Reds from black plates, which sold for £11,700. Meanwhile, a St Helena 1961 Tristan Relief overprint set (pictured), issued to benefit islanders following the 1961 volcanic eruption, went under the hammer. Only 434 sets were sold.

A collection of ‘Civil War Postal History and Confederate States’ provided a range of highlights at the recent Robert A Siegel sale in the USA. An ornate multi-coloured patriotic cover featuring a Map of Washington DC with George Washington on horseback monument was described as being: ‘a beautiful and rare Magnus Patriotic cover’. The cover featured a 2c Black (tied by a target cancel) and a 1c Blue (tied by ‘South (town?), May 7, 1863’ double-circle datestamp).

Spink’s Fine Stamps of China and Hong Kong auction at Spink China, attracted plenty of interest, with examples of rare and desirable lots. The highlight of the sale was a $5 myrtle and salmon in an irregular block of three cancelled by Nanking City c.d.s.. Described as a ‘stunning and highly desirable block’ and the only recorded multiple of these elusive issues, the eventual sale price was HKD$250,000.

The recent Cherrystone Philatelic Auctions sale featured a handful of Chinese stamps, including an unused 1897 Red Revenue, surcharged ‘5 dollars’ inverted on a 3c red. The stamp featured a small surface flaw and thinning at top, and fetched an impressive $30,000.
