Just Collecting’s inaugural online stamp rarities auction on 27 February 2020 featured a range of British and British Commonwealth classics together with an interesting selection of modern QE II stamp errors.
The key highlights in the Just Collecting – February 2020 Online Auction were:
Lot 12 – British Guiana used 1850-51 4c black on orange “Cotton Reel”, SG 2 realised £9,226
Full description: British Guiana, Used, 1850-51 4c black on orange "Cottonreel', violet M/S initials 'WHL' of W.H. Lortimer, cut round with frameline intact, affixed to piece by a wafer and tied by 1851 Demerara 'MR 20" circular date stamp, SG2. The method of affixation has caused some minor wrinkles not detracting in any way from the fact this is an attractive example of this classic rarity, particularly so with such fresh colour. These crude and primitive stamps from British Guiana are extremely popular with collectors and investors alike. Accompanied with an independent certificate of authenticity from Holcombe (1985). The Stanley Gibbons catalogue price for this rarity is £16,000.
Lot 18 - Ceylon 1857-59 4d original Perkins Bacon plate proof in black on wove, block of 4, SG4 realised £281, more than double its estimate.
Full description: Ceylon 1857-59 4d, SG4 original Perkins Bacon plate proof in black on wove, block of 4. Large margins at left and foot but slightly cut into at top and the lower right until just shaved at one point. Still an attractive and very scarce multiple.
Lot 38 – Great Britain 1840 1d “Penny Black” Rejected die, SGDP8b realised £4,688
Full description: Great Britain 1840 1d Rejected die, SGDP8b. Very fine unused example printed by Perkins Bacon in yellow-green on cream wove paper. Very scarce piece of early philatelic history.
Lot 181 - Great Britain 1965 3d missing Post Office Tower error, SG679a realised £3,500
Full description: Great Britain 1965 3d Post Office Tower Omitted. Superb unmounted mint with full original gum example with olive-yellow (Tower) omitted. Offered with normal for comparison. A stunning example of one of the most popular visual GB errors. Pierron records only 30 mint examples of this famous stamp. The SG catalogue price is £6,000. SG679a
Lot 190 – Great Britain 1970 Queen Elizabeth II 5d Literary Anniversaries. SG824ac was sold privately after the sale for an undisclosed sum above the reserve price.
Full description: Great Britain Queen Elizabeth II 1970 5d Literary Anniversaries, SG824ac. A superb unmounted original gum block of four with silver (inscriptions) omitted and a dry print of greenish blue on the Oliver Twist stamp. It is a dramatic error with the missing colour silver resulted in the omission of the inscription for famous Charles Dickens characters, namely Pickwick, Micawber, Copperfield and Oliver. One of the great rarities of QEII philately with only two mint blocks recorded by Pierron. Last valued by Stanley Gibbons at a price of £50,000.
