Australia Post have beaten Royal Mail in the race to issue the first instant gold medal stamp of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

London 2012, Day 3

The Australian post office has issued its first 2012 Australian Gold Medallist stamp after the success of the Women’s 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay team. The stamp features the four swimmers (Alicia Coutts, Cate Campbell, Brittany Elmslie and Melanie Schlanger) with their gold medals.

Meanwhile, Royal Mail staff were on standby to produce a gold medal during the first two days of the Olympic Games, but as yet Team GB have not tasted victory, with just a silver and bronze medal to their name.

Royal Mail plan to issue a stamp within hours of every Team GB gold medal, while they recently announced plans to paint post boxes gold in the winning athletes' home town.
