Australia Post's new 'era of the husky' stamps celebrates the contribution of husky dogs to research expeditions in Antarctica.
The new issue, launched on 9 September, focuses on the different breeds which are part of the husky family, including the Siberian Husky and the Samoed. These powerful dogs were an essential part of Antarctic expeditions, valued for their huge power (they can haul up to 90kg) and hardy nature.
Huskies were first used in Antarctica in a British expedition of 1898-1900, followed by Douglas Mawson's 1911 to 1914 Australasian Antarctic Expedition. Following a 1991 Antarctic Treaty, all introduced species (with the exception of humans) were banned from Antarctica, meaning that the last Huskies left the continent in 1993.
Australia Post's Era of the Husky portfolio comprises four stamps featuring photographs of huskies and sled teams; a stamp pack; first day cover; and maxicard set.
