Martin Ramirez, a self taught artist who for more than thirty years produced his work whilst a psychiatric hospital patient, is to be honoured in a new set of stamps from United States Postal Service.

Ramirez (1895-1963) was a Mexican national who left Mexico with this family in 1925 to begin a new life in the USA. Unable to find work during the Great Depression, he was picked up by the police and subsequently taken to a mental hospital after a diagnosis of schizophrenia. In the three decades before his death, Ramirez produced art work including paintings and collages, which eventually came to the attention of Tarmo Pasto, a professor of psychology and art.

The five stamps, designed by Antonio Alcala, feature colourful examples of Ramirez's work, where colour and repeating patterns are prominent.
