The Russian Post has issued the first in a series of philatelic products to mark the progress of the Olympic Torch relay ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympics.

The 50 ruble stamp shows the emblem of the Olympic Torch Relay of the XXII Olympic Winter Games 2014 in Sochi, with a surrounding sheet that shows a map of the Russian Federation, the relay torch, and images of the Moscow Kremlin and the Maritime Terminal in Sochi.

The torch relay for the 2014 Winter Games will be the longest and most extensive of any Winter Olympics to date. The torch will travel more than 65,000 kilometres in 123 days, visiting the capital cities of each of the 83 territories of the Russian Federation. The relay will culminate at Sochi on 7 February 2014, at the start of the Games.

Winter Olympics philatelic products

To mark the games, the Russian Post has announced a programme of special Winter Olympics philatelic products including fifty stamps, eight postal blocks and fifty 'stamped envelopes and cards'. During the torch relay, philatelic products will be franked at each of the main post offices, with a special additional franking held on board an icebreaker during an expedition to the North Pole.
