Sponsor a sleeper to support Mail Rail

The Postal Museum is offering members of the public the chance to sponsor a sleeper from the historic Mail Rail underground postal railway in London, which will open up to the public as a ride next year.

The sponsorship offer is being described as a ‘never to be repeated opportunity to own or gift a piece of history and be part of the next chapter of Mail Rail’s life.’ Sponsorship of one of the limited number of postal sleepers costs £250, and sponsors’ names will be added to commemorative plaques on their rejuvenated sleepers. Sponsorship will also entitle the bearer to an exclusive ‘Walk the Rails’ tour, allowing guests to walk through the now deserted Mail Rail tunnels to visit their sleeper, before they whir into life once more.

For more than three quarters of a century, the wooden sleepers used by Mail Rail – the world’s first, driverless electric railway - enabled billions of letters, parcels and postcards to pass safely through the capital and onwards across the country and often the world. A spokesperson said: ‘After years of loyal service, many of these oak and jarrah sleepers are now in need of restoration or replacement in order to enable the railway to stay open for generations to come.’
