The Bahamas Philatelic Bureau has unveiled four new stamps which celebrate fifty years of tourism in the Bahamas.

The stamps were developed as a joint project between the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and the Bahamas Philatelic Bureau.

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism was established in 1964 following a Promotion of Tourism act on the island. The stamps feature four of the best known hotels on the islands: Bahamas Princess Resort & Casino, Peace & Plenty Hotel, Atlantis Hotel and Baha Mar hotel.

The oldest of the hotels featured is the Peace & Plenty Hotel, opened in 1958 by Lawrence Lewis, heir to the Henry Flagler railroad fortune. He created a 24-room colonial style hotel on the site of an old sponge factory. The fourth stamp features a brand new hotel, the Baha Mar which opened earlier this year as a 1,000 acre $3.5 billion resort.
