The USA’s recently issued Maya Angelou stamp features a quote which was actually written by author Joan Walsh Anglund, the Washington Post reports.
The quote:
‘A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song’
was used by Angelou in interviews and has been previously attributed to the late author whose autobiography was entitled I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, but is said to originate from Anglund’s book of poetry A Cup of Sun, published in 1967.
‘Had we known about this issue beforehand, we would have used one of [Angelous’s] many other works,’ USPS spokesman Mark Saunders told the newspaper.
More than 80 million Maya Angelou Forever stamps were produced.
