Royal Mail have revealed the special stamps to be issued in 2018, with the schedule set to feature an eclectic mix of subjects from popular sit-com Dad’s Army to the final part of the First World War Centenary series.
The 250th anniversary of Captain Cook’s 1768 voyage on HMS Endeavour (previously marked on a set of stamps in 1968) will be celebrated in August, Hampton Court Palace will be showcased in July, whilst The Old Vic theatre will be given a set of stamps in May.
The Prince of Wales is set to be depicted beside his mother for a stamp issue celebrating his seventieth birthday, due for release in November.
Other notable anniversaries being marked include the RAF Centenary and the Representation of the People Act 1918, which gave women over the age of thirty the right to vote – it was not until the Representation of the People (Equal Franchise) Act in 1928 that women over the age of 21 were allowed to vote, finally achieving equality with men. ‘Votes for Women’ was also the subject of a British stamp in 1968.
As with this year’s schedule, a set on a subject ‘to be announced’ is pencilled in for October, prompting suggestions that Royal Mail may once again issue stamps themed on the Star Wars films, as it did in 2017.
