Jersey Post are marking the centenary of the birth of world-renowned ballerina Dame Margot Fonteyn DBE with six stamps and a miniature sheet featuring some of her most memorable performances.

Margot was associated with Jersey through her parents, who lived on the island for a number of years. She performed at the Jersey Opera House on two occasions, in 1972 and again in 1976, dancing a variety of excerpts from different ballets on each occasion.

Born Margaret Evelyn Hookham in Reigate, Surrey, England, Margot took up ballet lessons at the age of four. After studying in China where her father was transferred for work, she returned to London at the age of 14 and was invited to join the Vic-Wells Ballet School, which later became the Royal Ballet School. Adopting the stage name Margot Fonteyn in 1935, she continued her career as a dancer with the Royal Ballet, appearing in some of the most iconic performances the company has produced.

The six stamps commemorate the centenary of her birth on 18 May 1919. The first (52p) has a scene from Romeo and Juliet, showing the love scene. Next (67p) is Margot dancing the Rose Adagio in Sleeping Beauty, with a third value (80p) showing Margot performing a pas de deux in Amazon Forest. The fourth stamp (85p) also features Amazon Forestand then we see Margot as Juliet, dancing with Romeo (99p) and finally with Prince Florimund in Sleeping Beauty. The miniature sheet features Margot as Odette in Swan Lake.
