The 20th anniversary of the death of Princess Diana on 31 August 2017 has been commemorated by a new set of four stamps featuring black & white photos of the princess, who was the mother of Prince William and Prince Harry.

From her engagement to Prince Charles in 1981, through to her death in a Paris car crash in 1997, Diana Princess of Wales was one of the world's most photographed women. This summer marks the 20th anniversary of Diana's untimely death, and Gibraltar Post is marking the milestone with a new set of four stamps designed by Stephen Perera and issued on 31 August 2017, the date of the Diana anniversary.

Princess Diana

Diana Spencer was born on 1 July 1961 in Sandringham and had two older sisters and a younger brother. She was largely brought up by her father, Earl Spencer, her mother having left the family home when Diana was aged seven.

Diana became a member of the British royal family on her marriage to Prince Charles on 29 July 1981 and the pair had two children - Prince William (1982) and Prince Harry (1984).

Princess Diana became known for her compassion and charity work, and used her public role to highlight issues such as Aids and Landmines. Her brother Earl Spencer said of her: “Diana was the very essence of compassion, of duty, of style, of beauty. All over the world she was a symbol of selfless humanity. All over the world, a standard bearer for the rights of the truly downtrodden, a very British girl who transcended nationality. Someone with a natural nobility who was classless and who proved in the last year that she needed no royal title to continue to generate her particular brand of magic”.
