The set from Tristan de Cunha commemorates the 25th anniversary of the oceanographer's death

Jacques Cousteau's pioneering invention of the Aqua-Lung, in 1942/3 (with engineer Émile Gagnan) revolutionised underwater diving – and allowed Cousteau and Gagnan to film and explore the underwater world. His legacy of underwater exploration includes 115 TV documentaries, 50 books and an environmental protection foundation.

Tristan de Cunha, the  remote inhabited archipelago in the world, has commemorated the 25th anniversary of the death of the renowned underwater explorer in 1997 with a set of stamps that celebrate his innovations and the fact that his lifelong work inspired a generation of scientists and divers to learn about the oceans and the life forms that inhabit the sea.

The stamp set has been designed by Andrew Robinson for Pobjoy Mint Stamps.
