Royal Mail celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth II with a new set of eight stamps that recall moments in her long reign.

In case you missed it, this year marks the seventieth anniversary of the Queen’s accession to the throne, on 6 February 1952. It’s the first time a Platinum Jubilee has been celebrated in the UK and we get an additional bank holiday to celebrate and hold street parties – the perfect chance to reacquaint ourselves with our neighbours after the trials of the past few years.

Simon Thompson, CEO, Royal Mail, said:

‘These stamps are a celebration of the second Elizabethan Age and a tribute to a remarkable lifetime of duty and public service. We are honoured to be releasing them to mark the occasion of the first Platinum Jubilee in the UK’s history, a momentous occasion.’

The stamps show:

  • HM during a visit to the headquarters of MI5, London, February 2020
  • with His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh during a tour of the United States, Washington, October 1957
  • on a walkabout in Worcester, April 1980; Trooping the Colour, London, June 1978
  • touring the Provincial Museum of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, May 2005
  • during the Silver Jubilee celebrations, Camberwell, June 1977
  • during a tour of the West Indies, in Victoria Park, St Vincent, February 1966
  • and finally we see the Queen at the Order of the Garter ceremony in Windsor, June 1999.

An interesting note on the design is that none of the stamps include the silhouette of the Queen normally required on special stamps. This is because the Queen’s image is used in the design of the stamp, therefore removing the need for the silhouette.
