Royal Mail marks the fiftieth anniversary of the first album of one of the UK’s greatest music legends with a lively and colourful philatelic tribute to Sir Elton John.
With more than 300 million record sales and fifty top 40 hits, there can be few people around the world who haven’t heard at least one of the songs of Sir Elton John. Through six decades, Sir Elton has collected an impressive array of awards, including five Grammys, five Brits and an Academy Award, as well as collaborating with some of the biggest names in music, including Aretha Franklin, Luciano Pavarotti, Sting and Billy Joel.
For this fiftieth anniversary issue, Royal Mail has chosen to pay tribute to both Elton’s recorded music and his live concerts, with eight album cover stamps and four concert performance miniature sheet stamps.
Eight awesome albums
The eight albums featured on the stamps are: Honky Chateau, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Caribou,Captain Fantastic and the Dirt Brown Cowboy, Sleeping With The Past, The One, Made in Englandand Songs From The West Coast, which between them span almost thirty years, from 1972 to 2001.
