Austria Post has issued details of the release of a stamp made of wood, to mark the twentieth anniversary of the Austrian Federal Forestry Office.
Austria Post has issued details of the release of a stamp made of wood, to mark the twentieth anniversary of the Austrian Federal Forestry Office.
The stamp features an oak tree, which is one of Europe's best known trees, and can be found across Austria in both the common oak and sessile oak varieties. This is the first time that Austria Post has used wood in the production of a stamp and it proved something of a challenge, with veneer oak roundwood being used in the stamps.
One single oak was selected for use in the print run, with a single tree trunk from Breitenfurt in the Wienerwald district being used. The 200-year-old, 30-metre tall oak was felled specifically for the stamps.
Laser cutting and laser branding were used to cut each stamp out of the wood veneer, to minimise the possibility of the wood splitting. This means that each of the stamps is unique.
