South Georgia is to issue stamps to celebrate the landmark BBC TV series Frozen Planet. ...

South Georgia has issued a set of Frozen Planet stamps ahead of the BBC’s new Frozen Planet TV series due to be screened this autumn, which features the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia as one of its key locations.

The four stamps, issued on 15 September, feature four species pf birds and animals against a backdrop of the island: Southern Elephant Seal (60p), Albatross Chick (70p), Blonde Fur Seal (95p), and King Penguin (£1.15), which represent the seasons of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter respectively. The souvenir sheet shows a Wandering Albatross against a background of frozen South Georgia.

The albatross chick stamp is particularly special, as cameraman John Aitchison spent several weeks at the Bird Island Albatross colony and became one of the few people in the world to witness the first flight of a young Albatross, a bird which could spend most of the sixty years of its life in flight.
