A collection of rare British Commonwealth and Empire stamps heads to auction on Wednesday, November 1. The sale at St Helier, Jersey memorabilia dealer Paul Fraser Collectibles will mark one of the first occasions rare postage stamps have been offered through a descending-price “Dutch Auction”.

Paul Fraser Collectibles launches the unusual auction on Wednesday 1 November:

  • 80 rare stamps from the British Commonwealth and Empire
  • Descending price auction: price falls daily at 10am (UK)
  • First bid wins each stamp

In contrast to traditional “English” auctions, the prices of the postage stamps will drop daily until sold.

Paul Fraser Collectibles’ CEO, Mike Hall, says:

“This auction offers stamp collectors the opportunity to own key pieces of GB Commonwealth and Empire philately. Every day at 10am, we reduce the price of each stamp. And we keep reducing the prices until the stamps are sold. It’s a fantastic opportunity to grab a rare piece of philately for far below catalogue and market value.”

The 80 postage stamps

Starting prices range from £225 and £6,500, offering opportunities for all budgets. From Australia to Zanzibar, and 1853 to 1977, the auction is truly diverse. Highlights include:

  • An exceptional Australia 1929-30 Kangaroo £2 (starting price £3,500)
  • A rare and desirable Bermuda 1938-53 5s block of four (starting price £2,950)
  • A hugely scarce Malaya Japanese Occupation 1942 Malacca 50c black (starting price £2,750)

Hall adds:

“We’re expecting major interest. Especially as, unlike most auctions, there is no 25%+ buyer’s commission. So the price you bid is the price you pay.”

Why is it called a Dutch Auction?

Dutch Auctions get their name from the Netherlands' desire for tulips in the 17th century. Flower sellers needed a fast way to sell their tulips - and the descending-price auction was the answer.
