A new four-stamp issue from The Bahamas marks the island’s 50th anniversary of independence on 10 July 1973.

The Bahamas achieved majority rule in 1967, when Lynden Pindling of the PLP (The Progressive Liberal Party) became the first black Premier of the Bahamian colony. Calls for independence became more insistent, and following on Order in Council from the UK Government, 300 years of British rule came to an end. The British Union Jack was lowered and the new black, gold and aquamarine Bahamas flag raised just before midnight on 9 July 1973, in front of an estimated 50,000 spectators.

Issue date 6 July
