It all started in 1932 in a Danish carpenter’s workshop with little wooden toys that were to go on to take the world by storm. Austrian Post is celebrating this anniversary with a commemorative stamp which also shows one of the symbols of Vienna.

Brick by brick – building LEGO® love for 90 years

Ninety years ago, the carpenter Ole Kirk Kristiansen from Billund had the idea of making little wooden toys.

His first collection comprised 36 carefully made items, including cars, aeroplanes and yo-yos, which were meant to bring the wider world a bit closer for the children in the region. But Ole Kirk Kristiansen could never have imagined at that time the incredible global success that would follow.

The LEGO® brick as we know it today – with its system of interlocking studs and tubes that allows for endless possibilities for creative building – was patented in 1958 by Ole’s son Godtfred.

The name “LEGO” is derived from the two Danish words “Leg Godt”, meaning “play well”.

There are almost no limits to playing well and building creatively with LEGO bricks; just about any object can be reproduced authentically, whether it be a landscape, a figure, an object or an iconic building.

To celebrate its 90th anniversary, the LEGO group and Austrian Post are collaborating to issue a special commemorative stamp in the LEGO style, the motif for which is Vienna’s world-famous Giant Ferris Wheel, because this symbol of Vienna represents both creative building and Austria as a country in equal measure.
