The centenary of Jersey Island Cricket Club is celebrated in a new set of six stamps from Jersey Post
Illustrated by Jersey artist Ron Mills, the 100 Years of Jersey Island Cricket Club stamps not only show different aspects of the game, but feature scenes from each of the Island’s main cricket grounds.
Although cricket has been played on Jersey since the mid 19th-century, its development on the island really took off with the formation of the Jersey Island Cricket Club in 1922. A century on, the club’s development programme encourages players at grassroots level in schools and the community, provides competitive opportunities for young players aged 11 to 19 as a pathway to the senior national team, and has a strong focus on developing women’s cricket, with its Jersey Lionesses team ranked 35th in the world.
The six stamps show players running between wickets at Florence Boot (56p); a bowler at Farmers Cricket Club (82p); Jersey Lionesses batting with a background of Victoria College (91p); junior cricket at St Michael’s School (£1.20); batters and bowlers at Grainville Cricket ground (£1.37) and a spectacular bit of fielding at Les Quennevais (£1.75)
‘I was delighted to be offered this commission from Jersey Post featuring local cricket,’ said Ron Mills. ‘The brief suited my retro/modern painting style perfectly. I was keen that the central figures portrayed movement and action in contrast to this style’s mechanical and angular nature.’
