Jersey Post takes us on a journey back to the height of the Victorian era, portraying the island in the summer of 1857 as it might have appeared to author George Eliot (real name Mary Ann Evans), who visited Jersey that year.
Eliot is perhaps best known for the novel Middlemarch and may well have been inspired by her island surroundings during that summer visit to Jersey, which is reimagined by Peter Fancourt on these six stamps.
The paintings show mid 19th-century Jersey and are accompanied by quotes from Eliot, demonstrating her feelings about the places she explored and the sites she saw. Peter used Eliot’s letters and journals to imagine her travels, with six scenes as follows: an island of orchards; the grand old castle; the first lovely walk; a peaceful, scarcely rippled sea; delicious evening; a little of Jersey human nature.
