Girlguiding in Jersey celebrates its centenary this summer and six new stamps from Jersey Post celebrate Guiding on the island today through six themes: caring, challenging, empowering, fun, inclusive and inspiring.
Like most GirlGuiding units around the world, Girlguiding Jersey was originally inspired by reports of the rapidly expanding Boy Scout and Girl Guide Movements in England and the adventures that these groups had. Three companies were originally formed in Jersey – two at the Ladies College and a third with girls from the Girls Friendly Society.
In July 1919, King George V, Queen Mary and Princess Mary visited Jersey and within three years, sixteen companies and eight Brownie packs had registered across the island and ‘Girlguiding’ in Jersey was firmly established.
GIRLGUIDING IN JERSEY
Today, Girlguiding Jersey has over 500 members in 27 units across the Island and members can get involved in anything from adventure sports to travel and taking part in community action projects. The programme is divided into six themes: Know Myself, Be Well, Have Adventures, Take Action, Skills for my Future and Express Myself.
The six stamps feature girls from the different sections of Girlguiding Jersey, together with the relevant Promise Badges. The girls are shown taking part in activities described by the values chosen to empower girls to be their best and face the challenges of growing up today. The first stamp (52p) is titled Caring and shows girls from the Rainbows (Girl Guiding’s youngest section) planting crocuses in the grounds of Government House to raise awareness of the Rotary Club’s polio campaign. Next (67p) is Challenging, with Rangers setting out from Jersey Airport on an international adventure.
The third stamp, an 80p value, features an activity many will associate with Guiding and Scouting, with Guides taking part in a camping trip, followed by Fun, an 85p value showing Brownies learning to surf at St Ouen’s Bay in the west of Jersey. The final two stamps are Inclusive (99p) with girls working to develop team work skills, and Inspiring, showing Rangers and Leaders discussing international projects.
