  • Six stamps featuring some of the finest aircraft the UK has ever produced form the centrepiece of Royal Mail’s latest issue, celebrating the centenary of the Royal Air Force.

Just seven months before the end of World War I, the Royal Air Force (RAF) merged with the Royal Flying Corps to become the world’s oldest independent air force. Now, a century on, we can look back at the role the RAF has played, not only in the country’s military history but in the fields of aviation and engineering achievements, with pilots and planes which are the envy of the world.

The six new stamps, printed as three horizontal se-tenant pairs, feature six aircraft from the RAF’s 100-year history. Not only have these planes defended Britain during times of war, they have also taken part in peacekeeping missions around the world, saving lives in some of the most dangerous regions of the globe.

The planes featured are:

  • Sopwith Camel F1
  • Hurricane Mk I
  • Vulcan B2
  • Lightning F6
  • Nimrod MR2
  • Typhoon FGR4
