Canada Post has issued a commemorative Grey Cup stamp to mark the playing of the 100th Grey Cup game on 25 November 2012. ...
The special stamp is a follow-up to the Grey Cup issue from August 2012, which included:
- Seventeen stamps
- Ten first day covers
- Collectible strips from coils featuring eight Canadian Football League teams
- A special single stamp highlighting the Grey Cup
The stamps were designed by Benison Byrne, the official Canadian Football League advertising agency. Liz Wong, stamp design manager at Canada Post, said: 'Working with a creative team that knew the CFL—and the history of the teams—was instrumental in producing an issue of this scale. Securing the rights and permissions alone was a huge undertaking, but we were lucky to have both the right players in place and the support of the CFL along the way. That made things go smoothly.'
The special 100th game stamp features the Grey Cup, two players running towards the trophy, a 100 logo, and is overprinted with the Toronto Argonauts logo.
The Grey Cup
The Grey Cup is the name of the championship game of the Canadian Football League, and of the trophy awarded to the winning team. The Toronto Argonauts have won the Cup more times than any other team, with sixteen championships. The trophy was commissioned in 1909 and the first winning team was the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.
