The United States Postal Service is to issue stamps which celebrate the increasing popularity of farmers' markets, once a mainstay of the shopping experience in America.

The four-stamp Forever set, which is to be issued in August, has been designed by Greg Breeding (art director) and Robin Moline (artist), who together created the concept of a farmers' market which appears across the line of four stamps, whilst allowing each stamp to work as a stand-along image.

Starting from the left, the first stamp is devoted to baked goods, including cinammon rolls, fresh bread and cookies. Next is fresh produce, including apples, melons, grapes and potatoes. The third stamp has a table adorned with cut flowers, whilst live plants and flowers with hand-written labels appear on the final stamp.

Farmers' markets have been growing in popularity in the last decade, as a reaction against the reliance of shoppers on chain stores and shopping malls. From the days of the first settlers in America, farmers' markets were a popular way (and for some, the only way) to shop, allowing shoppers to speak to the growers directly and get advice about the produce on offer, as well as catching up with friends and neighbours.
