Jersey Post has taken a modern approach to the 800th anniversary of the issue of Magna Carta - with stamps that promote the key ideals of the historic document, upon which modern democracy was founded.

On 15 June 1215, King John signed Magna Carta in which he agreed to limit his powers, following pressure from his barons and senior churchmen; this historic document formed one of the keystones of modern day democrary and influenced lawmaking in the centuries to come.

To celebrate the anniversary, Jersey Post's colourful stamps feature words which sound very modern but were actually also at the heart of Magna Carta: justice, freedom, human rights, liberty, citizenship, democrary. The '800 years of...' wording on each stamp highlights the history behind these terms.

Rachel Mackenzie, philatelic marketing manager at Jersey Post, spoke of the ideals behind Magna Carta: 'What is amazing is that, despite being 800 years old, once you get past the complex language, much of the content and meaning of the text remains just as relevant today as it did when the charter was first sealed. It is for this reason that we decided to take a contemporary approach to the design of the stamps. Bold, bright colours and strong symbolic imagery help to reinforce the values of Magna Carta as the foundation stones of modern society and law.'

Also available is a miniature sheet which contains a £1.50 stamp with the wording '800 years of Magna Carta' and a short background to the document.
