Poland has been awarded the 2015 St Gabriel Award for best international religious stamp for its Pope John Paul II sainthood stamp.

The St Gabriel Award is an annual award for the best religious stamp of the year and was established in 1969 and named after St Gabriel, the 'Lord's postman'.

Representatives from the Polish Post received the award at the Fioroni Museum in Legnago, northern Italy. Polish stamp designer Marzanna Dabrowska and her husband Jacek Dabrowscy created the winning stamp, which was their second win in the contest; the first being their 2011 stamp to mark the beatification of John Paul II.

This year's winning stamp, which beat 100 nominees from other countries, shows a smiling John Paul II surrounded by an oreole made up of seven rings of quotes from the Pope, who was born in Poland.
