The schedule of British stamps to be issued during 2016 has been revealed, with the Queen’s ninetieth birthday and the 500th anniversary of Royal Mail amongst the subjects.

The current schedule is as follows:

7 Jan - Shackleton and the Endurance Expedition
17 Feb - Royal Mail 500
15 Mar - British Humanitarians
5 Apr - Shakespeare
21 Apr - HM The Queen’s 90th Birthday
17 May - Animail
21 June - First World War - 1916
7 July - Music Giants (tbc)
28 July - Beatrix Potter
16 Aug - Landscape Gardens
2 Sept - The Great Fire of London
15 Sept - Agatha Christie
20 Oct - to be announced
8 Nov - Christmas

The stamp year will begin with a set to mark the 100th anniversary of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Endurance Expedition, which began in 1914 and saw the ship become trapped in the ice in early 1915, prompting an epic journey to find help.

The founding of Royal Mail, in 1516 when Henry VIII established a ‘Master of the Posts’ will be celebrated in February, while British Humanitarians will be honoured in March in a set likely to follow the design of the previously issued ‘Remarkable Lives’ set of 2014.

The 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death will see the bard return to British stamps once again, while the ongoing First World War series will return in June. Writers Beatrix otter and Agatha Christie are to be honoured in July and September, respectively.
