Monaco Post have issued a €3.70 stamp to mark the 150th birth anniversary of writer Sidonie Gabrielle Colette.
Born in 1873 in Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye (Yonne), Sidonie Gabrielle Colette remained in the area until her marriage to Henri Gauthier-Villars, known as Willy, in 1893.
It was he who encouraged her to write the series of four Claudine stories (1900–1904).
Following her divorce in 1906, she became a mime artist while continuing to write novels and memoirs:
- Les Vrilles de la vigne (The Tendrils of the Vine)
- La Vagabonde (The Vagabond)
- Dialogues de bêtes (Barks and Purrs)
- La Retraite sentimentale (Retreat from Love)
- L’Envers du music-hall (Music Hall Sidelights)
She wrote articles for Le Matin, and married the newspaper’s editor-in-chief, Henri de Jouvenel, in 1912.
Elected to the Belgian Royal Academy (1936) and the Académie Goncourt (1944), she died in Paris in 1954. Her style and the extent of her work rank her among the best writers of the twentieth century.
Colette was a frequent visitor to the French Riviera, and particularly Monaco, which in 1950 she described as “the only country where the borders are flowers.”
This issue will be on sale at the “Office des Timbres”, the “Musée des Timbres et des Monnaies”, the post offices and philatelic counters of the Principality, the Monaco stamp-dealers as well as the “Carré d’Encre” in Paris, France. It will be included, with other values, in the 1st Part of the philatelic programme 2023 and offered to our subscribers and customers.
