The descendants of two of the leaders of British forces in the Battle of Jutland have been involved in the creation of Isle of Man Post Office's centenary miniature sheet.
The miniature sheet, which contains two stamps, will be issued on 17 February 2016 and marks the centenary of the Battle of Jutland, a naval battle fought on 31 May and 1 June 1916. The battle saw British Royal Navy forces engaged against the Imperial German Navy in the North Sea. Fourteen British ships and eleven German ships were lost and both sides claimed victory, with the final result still the source of debate among historians in the present day.
The miniature sheet features two £1.75 stamps featuring the faces of the men who led the fleets at the Battle of Jutland:
Commander British Grand Fleet Admiral Sir John Jellicoe
Commander German High Seas Fleet Admiral Reinhard Scheer
Commander Battle Cruiser Fleet Vice Admiral Sir David Beatty
Commander 1st Scouting Group Vice Admiral Franz Hipper.
The stamps were designed by Francesca Jellicoe, great-grandaughter of Admiral Jellicoe, who led the British fleet at the battle. The sheet itself shows a dramatic scene from the sea battle by Willy Stöwer, William Lionel Whyllie and Pat McDonald.
The family connection continues with the involvement of Nick Jellicoe, who is the grandson of Admiral Jellicoe. Nick has written the information card for the Battle of Jutland First Day Cover, as well as an analysis of the battle for the Presentation Pack.
