Brandenburg Gate stamp from Germany

Located in the heart of the capital, this iconic building was considered a memorial to Germany’s division into east and west, but since the fall of the wall, is now a symbol of German reunification.

Constructed between 1788 and 1791 for King Frederick William II, Brandenberg Gate is Berlin’s only surviving historical city gate and was Berlin’s first Greek revival building. Designed by Carl Gotthard Langhans, architect to the Prussian court, the design was inspired by the monumental gateway at the entrance to the Acropolis in Athens.

Following the post-war division of Germany and Berlin, the gate was in the Soviet sector, and was marooned in an exclusion zone when the Berlin Wall went up. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, 100,000 people gathered for the gate’s official reopening on 22 December 1989.

This new series follows on from the ‘Sights’ definitive stamp series that was issued from November 1987 to February 2004, but it has been largely designed by artificial intelligence (AI). As well as physical stamps, this series will also be available as crypto stamps.
