Royal Mail showcases ten well-loved toys from the past 100 years, celebrating the heyday of Britain’s toy industry and recalling iconic and classic favourites of both boys and girls.
Britain has a long tradition of toymaking and selling, with the world-famous London toy store Hamleys opening in 1760. Almost seventy years earlier, philosopher John Locke invented the concept of printed wooden blocks and in the 1760s, John Spilsbury created the first mass produced jigsaw puzzles.
Royal Mail’s ten stamps and associated products pay tribute to this long heritage, whilst focusing on what many would deem the golden age of toy production – the 1930s to 1970s. Names such as Hornby, Action Man and Sindy bring back nostalgic memories of childhood for many of us and these colourful stamps present the detail of each of the toys, many of which are of a simple design but provided hours of fun and imagination.
