The British Library Philatelic Collections bring together some of the most prestigious and important stamp collections in the world…

…and they are featured in every issue of Stamp & Coin Mart magazine!

The Collections were established in 1891 with the bequest of the Tapling Collection, and now about fifty important collections or archives are held, all of which have been acquired by donation, bequest, or transfer from Government departments.

There is a permanent exhibition area for the Philatelic Collections on the upper ground floor of the British Library at St Pancras, where members of the public can see some of the world’s rarest and most significant stamps and philatelic material.

In total, the Collections hold around 8 million philatelic items!

Treasures held at the British Library in London include:

• An example of the famous 1847 'Post Office' 1d. orange used on Ball invitation envelope.

• Great Britain: 1858-79 1d. red, an example of the rare plate 77 used on piece.

• Great Britain - Telegraph: 1876-81 £5 handpainted essay.

Each issue of Stamp & Coin Mart features an in-depth examination of items or collections held at the British Library.
